After-Hours Remote Area Nurse
Remote Northern Territory | 2 Weeks On / 2 Weeks Off

Are you an experienced Remote Area Nurse looking for a unique role that offers genuine work-life balance and the opportunity to help shape an innovative model of remote healthcare?

We are recruiting an experienced After-Hours Remote Area Nurse to join an Aboriginal community-controlled health service in a remote Northern Territory community.

Working exclusively outside standard clinic hours, you will provide telephone triage, clinical advice, assessment and emergency response to community members. This service has been designed to provide broader access to clinical support after hours, moving beyond a traditional emergency-only model.

This is an initial 4–6 month fixed-term contract, with the potential to transition into an ongoing permanent arrangement if it is the right fit for both parties.

The Opportunity
  • 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off roster
  • Rostered hours of approximately 9:00pm–8:00am
  • Salary equivalent to approximately $142,054 per annum plus super
  • Retention allowance
  • Generous salary packaging benefits
  • Return flights between your home location and the community
  • Accommodation provided while on roster
  • Opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of an innovative after-hours service
Your Responsibilities In this autonomous position, you will:
  • Provide telephone triage, clinical advice and follow-up support overnight
  • Assess and manage patients presenting to the clinic after hours
  • Respond to emergency call-outs in accordance with established clinical protocols
  • Deliver culturally safe, patient-centred care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients
  • Work autonomously within your scope of practice, CARPA guidelines and specialist advice
  • Accurately document all after-hours activity and clinical interventions
  • Ensure the emergency area, equipment and consumables are ready for the following day
  • Support clinical audits, recalls, point-of-care testing quality checks and data-cleaning activities
  • Contribute to community health education and continuous quality-improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with the broader multidisciplinary primary healthcare team
About You To be considered, you will require:
  • Current unrestricted AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
  • At least five years of broad post-registration nursing experience
  • At least three years of remote primary healthcare experience
  • Demonstrated experience working autonomously in remote settings
  • Strong clinical assessment, triage and emergency-response capabilities
  • Experience providing clinical advice and follow-up support by telephone
  • Previous experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Current Advanced Life Support certification
  • Current Remote Emergency Care qualification or equivalent
  • Current triage certification
  • Recognised immunisation provider qualification
  • Pharmacotherapeutics qualification or endorsement
  • Current unrestricted driver’s licence
  • Ability to obtain the required criminal history and Working with Children clearances
Experience with Communicare or PCIS will be highly regarded.

Why Apply? This is a rare opportunity for an experienced RAN who enjoys autonomous practice but wants a structured roster with significant time away from work.

You will play an important role in improving access to healthcare outside standard clinic hours while contributing to the ongoing development of a new remote service-delivery model.
