Nurse Unit Manager – Surgical Ward

Location: Rural West Victoria
Hours: Full-time Mon-Fri (no on-call)
Salary: $137,900 +Super & $15,900 Salary Packaging
Start Date: ASAP

About the Role
Lead a busy Surgical Ward within a well-regarded regional health service delivering high-quality, person-centred care. this is a key leadership role responsible for driving clinical excellence, workforce performance, and operational efficiency across a mixed inpatient environment caring for surgical, medical, postnatal, paediatric, and day-stay patients.

The ward includes 8 day beds and 24 overnight beds/chairs, with a diverse patient cohort and strong existing clinical team. The unit is currently well staffed clinically.

This is an ideal opportunity to step into a well-supported leadership role where the focus is on team cohesion, staff support, performance management, and maintaining high standards of care - rather than major overhaul or crisis management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide operational and clinical leadership for the Surgical Ward
  • Lead workforce planning, rostering, and staff performance
  • Support and mentor nursing staff including ANUMs and RNs
  • Support change management and team stability within the unit
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and senior leadership
  • Manage patient flow across surgical, medical, postnatal, and paediatric cohorts
  • Address day-to-day performance management matters and support team accountability
Requirements
  • AHPRA Registered Nurse
  • Proven experience in a senior nursing leadership role (NUM/ANUM)
  • Strong clinical background in acute and/or surgical nursing
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
Desirable:
  • Experience in regional or rural health settings
  • Background across mixed surgical/medical inpatient environments
